Christmas Market Cruise In Germany
My first experience at river cruising will be unforgettable. It was a Christmas markets cruise on the Danube. When I first booked it, I was just thinking about how cold it was going be when we got there.
We started our adventure in Vienna. We of course took a tour of the city and saw the Spanish Riding School which is home of the famous Lipizzaner Stallions. We took in the beautiful architecture, scenic parks and gothic spires. We finally arrived at our highly anticipated destination! Our first Christmas Market. What an experience! First thing we were introduced to the Gluhwein, warm mulled wine. At each market they have their own designed mug. This is the ticket to staying warm.
One of the best stops on the river was the Melk Abbey. We had an 80 year old monk play the spectacular organs for us. Next on the list was the cute village of Durnstein, Austria the “Pearl of the Wachau”.
We stopped at world famous markets at Schonbrun Palace, Rothenburg, Nuremburg and Munich. The markets are the best place to get you in the Christmas spirit! Each market we went to had amazing food like Stollen, Sausages, Lebkuchen and potato pancakes. This is just naming a few of my favorites. You can find handmade ornaments, nut crackers, smokers, Christmas cards made out of wood and an endless amount of schnapps.
A river cruise is the best way to see all these wonderful markets. You unpack once, eat amazing food, the ship holds less the 170 people so you get to know everyone. They take you to the markets and give a walking tour to get the layout of the towns. It is one of the most relaxing vacations you can take and still visit several places.
On the last day of our trip it snowed, what a beautiful ending of a wonderful trip! I was so worried about how cold I was going to be and it wasn’t a major concern at all. It was like a storybook!
